Heavy Metal
To start off, many people don't know what classifies music to be heavy metal: “Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Heavy metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes.” There are many things that come into play when it comes to heavy metal music, especially from an early period. a lot of early-on heavy metal bands would be considered Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, some of the music that put them on the map was released in the late 1960s when rock music started collecting more attention. In the late 1980s bands such as Nirvana and Guns N Roses became more popular mainstream heavy metal bands.
Heavy metal came about and was first really used as a genre in late 1960/70s. People considered bands like The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck Group, as well as Jimi Hendrix. In my opinion, none of these bands would be classified as heavy metal, but I guess during this time since it was a new thing this is what they classified it as, in my opinion, Jeff Beck Group, as well as Jimi Hendrix, would be more on the side of blues-rock. The song added below is one of my favorite songs that the Jeff Beck Group has done a cover on (it is an original song by Bob Dylan) and honestly listening to this song it sounds more blues than any other genre to me.
I want to start off by talking about the history of heavy metal and how it evolved into a genre, heavy metal evolved from classic rock and rock music. Heavy metal music includes heavy riffs, lots of distortion, and vulgar singers. It also consists of electric instruments instead of acoustic guitars. Black Sabbath is considered the first band to start the wave of heavy metal music, Ozzy Osborne was their singer at the time of them first being considered the first band of heavy metal music, but he has now been pursuing a career as a solo singer. “In 1970 Black Sabbath released their debut self-titled album. With their witchcraft and Satanism-infused lyrics and tritone chords, it was then that heavy metal was well and truly born.” Black Sabbath was the first band to put heavy metal on the map, most heavy metal bands consist of a lot of demonic and witchcraft energy. Over time since heavy metal has evolved as a subgenre of classic rock, other subgenres have evolved like black metal, death metal, and thrash metal. Heavy metal evolved from rock music which evolved from blues music. The song linked here is Sabbra Cadabra by Black Sabbath, this is a classic song by them, and you'll be able to get a listen of what this band sounds like with being considered the first band to start heavy metal.
When looking deeper into a lot of heavy metal bands, there are so many musicians and artists that have jumped from band to band or even singers who have created more than one band. for example, Dave Mustaine the lead guitarist of Metallica left the band due to his drinking problems after getting his act together he later created the band Megadeth. It is to be said that “Dave Mustaine did not play in any songs within the band before he left but he is credited on six Metallica songs, two of which he wrote mostly himself and four of which he contributed. Mustaine uses some of his Metallica riffs for Megadeth songs". Furthermore, another band that has had their lead singer branch off and create other bands is the band, Danzig, this band is my favorite heavy metal band out of all bands. In 1977, the lead singer Glenn Danzig started a band called The Misfits he was wanting to pursue doing something more than just any regular band. The band called The Misfits is another heavy metal band they were founded in New Jersey in 1977 by the singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Glenn Danzig. "In October 1983, after releasing several singles and three albums, and gaining a small underground following, Danzig disbanded the Misfits due to his increasing animosity for the other band members and his dissatisfaction with their musical abilities." After Danzig left this band, they gained a new lead singer Michale Graves. When Danzig left, he created another band called Danzig, this band started in 1987 consisting of an electric guitar, rhythm guitar, drums, bass guitar, & keyboard. The band name Danzig came from “Marilyn Monroe's last film. The Misfits combined campy horror and sci-fi lyrics/imagery with Danzig's melodic vocals, backed by chaotic punk thrashing.” When Danzig got started Rick Rubin sought out the band Danzig; he had also signed the band Slayer in 1988. What is surprising is that Rick Rubin did not even like the band at all in an interview he said “I didn't like them, and I actually thought they were terrible. But I always knew that Glenn was a great singer and that he had great songwriting potential that hadn't been fully realized.” After getting signed by the band Danzig made a few adjustments with bandmates and continued to make music and become one of the top bands. Also this song that is added is Sistinas By Danzig, his voice is literally amazing and he low-key sounds like Elvis but way better. the second video added here is a early song by Megadeth called The Conjuring.
Overall, so many more additions come into play when it comes to heavy metal music, and all these bands don't even make a dent in how many bands take part in heavy metal music. There is not a whole lot behind the evolution of blues, but overall, it is an amazing genre and even my favorite genre of music.

I really enjoyed reading your blog! I never really thought about the history of heavy metal music but it was super cool to learn about it. I also loved the videos you included.
ReplyDeleteHey Amanda, your blog was really interesting to read. I loved the song 'conjuring' I thought it was a really fun song to listen to. I found it interesting that many people in bands created other bands. I Love the sound of the acoustic guitar.
ReplyDeleteIt was really fun to learn a little bit about the history of heavy metal. I like Black Sabbath very much! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAmanda, thank you! I like how you mention where heavy metal music is going from here and where it came from. The syncopation in heavy metal is something that can often be forgotten. It is also fascinating how different songs within the same genre can really be, even when using the same instruments. The contrast between your two examples, Danzig and Sabbra Cadabra, is great to compare and contrast to showcase the complexity of the genre.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog even though I'm not a fan of heavy metal. I was really interesting reading about the history of heavy metal!
