Jamaican Reggae

Jamaican Reggae The country of Jamaica has so many different types of music and is such a diverse culture. Reggae music originated in Jamaica, reggae music ties back to the late 1940s, but this type of music became very popular in the 1960s. Reggae music consists of many different music elements all combined into one genre of music. It consists of rhythm and blues (R&B), jazz, mento, calypso, African, and Latin American music, and so many more. “Reggae scenes consist of two guitars, one for rhythm and one for lead—drums, congas, and keyboards, with a couple of vocalists.” Even though reggae music is like a little sub-genre of all the other different types of music combined, it is still its own type of music. For example, reggae music is classified as having a slower tempo, offbeats, melodic bass lines, etc.      Background of Reggae Music The word “reggae” was invented around the 1960s, when this word was invented, it was to classify a “ragged” style of dance music. Music & Family

Image
Music & Family  Personally, from my experience, I don't think that music and family go together. My whole family has diverse music tastes, as different from other families they may have certain music they listen to during family gatherings and such. In my family, everyone has their own kind of music taste. I only have two other family members who somewhat like the same kind of music: my grandmother and her sister. I decided to interview my grandmother's sister (Didi). After interviewing her I can see how she and I relate on many different levels when it comes to music taste. A little background on my aunt. She's Italian and grew up in the Bronx, New York, she also played the flute when she was younger but did not enjoy it, she only had to play because of school.  To start off I asked what her favorite type of music is, she loves disco music, more of the 70s and early 80s disco music. She also really likes Michael Jackson, who is her number one artist. He was a very big ...

American Roots Music

Heavy Metal  To start off, many people don't know what classifies music to be heavy metal: “Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Heavy metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes.” There are many things that come into play when it comes to heavy metal music, especially from an early period. a lot of early-on heavy metal bands would be considered Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, some of the music that put them on the map was released in the late 1960s when rock music started collecting more attention. In the late 1980s bands such as Nirvana and Guns N Roses became more popular mainstream heavy metal bands. Heavy metal came about and was first really used as a genre in late 1960/70s. People considered bands like The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck Group, as well as Jimi Hendrix. In my opinion, none of these bands would be classified as heavy metal, but ...

Music & Gender

Image
Music & Gender  When it comes to music and gender in my opinion, I do not stereotype music when it comes to gender. Some individuals may notice a difference in what their male/female friends listen to, but I believe it all comes down to genuinely what you like, there can also be some influence from whom you surround yourself with. I think that even if you are male or female your music taste is solely based on what you like and what you enjoy listening to.    Some individuals are very easily influenced by others. In my opinion, it is seen more within the male community. If a male listens to music that is looked at as "feminine" they can be deemed as “not masculine”. You can see more within the male community males try to fit in with society's standards and norms which can cause things such as their music taste to be something they don't even enjoy. For example, if a male who is really into rock/alternative music surrounds himself with individuals who only listen ...

Music & Rituals

Music & Rituals  I have a lot of different cultures within my family. On my mother's side, we are Italian & Hispanic, but we practice more Italian culture on my mother's side. Some of my older family is from Italy but moved to New York as they got older. When my sister got married, there were a lot of Italian traditions that took place at the after-party of the wedding. During the ceremony, it was like your classical wedding as my sister walked down the aisle to your classic "here comes the bride" song.    8 During the reception, there were many traditions and dances that took place. The dinner part of the reception after-party was filled with all Italian dishes such as finger foods, bruschetta, macaroni & meatballs, cakes, cookies, etc. There were a couple of dances that took place such as “The Money Dance” and “The Tarantella”. Some people may find it rude to have The Money Dance included in their wedding, but when it is a cultural tradition, many peop...

Music & Me

Music & Me  Hi, I'm Amanda Lee, I'm currently a chemistry major. The main things I am into are drawing, music, and fashion. I moved here from Atlanta, but I was born in New Jersey.  When I was young, I lived in Jersey, the Bronx, and Maine before we moved to Atlanta. I also played guitar and violin for a few years, but now it is an off-and-on thing.  After I finish my schooling here id either like to have my own clothing business started or go into the field of working on crime scenes or in a lab.  1. There is a lot of music that I love that is my go-to I am into many types of music, such as rock, punk rock, alternative, and emo rap. In my opinion, if someone deeply enjoys music no one has a "go-to" type of music they listen to, normally, or at least I don't, I listen to music based on my mood. If I had to choose a song I would consider my "go-to" if I am in a good mood would be " Dead Skin Mask" by Slayer  ...
