Music & Gender 

When it comes to music and gender in my opinion, I do not stereotype music when it comes to gender. Some individuals may notice a difference in what their male/female friends listen to, but I believe it all comes down to genuinely what you like, there can also be some influence from whom you surround yourself with. I think that even if you are male or female your music taste is solely based on what you like and what you enjoy listening to. 

 

Some individuals are very easily influenced by others. In my opinion, it is seen more within the male community. If a male listens to music that is looked at as "feminine" they can be deemed as “not masculine”. You can see more within the male community males try to fit in with society's standards and norms which can cause things such as their music taste to be something they don't even enjoy. For example, if a male who is really into rock/alternative music surrounds himself with individuals who only listen to rap music and look at rock/alternative music as a genre that is “weird” they are more likely to sway towards rap music for the thought of fitting in. 

 

Within the female community in my experience/my opinion there has never been a stigma around what females should listen to or the fear of being looked at differently pertaining to what they listen to and what they shouldn't listen to. I meet very few people who listen to rock music and when anyone asks me what music I listen to its always rock. I've met so many females that have listened to all different types of music, but when it comes to males, I've met very few who listen to any genre of music that is outside of rap music. 

 

The main genres of music I listen to are rock and emo-rap. Within both types of genres, I know many males and females who like the same genre of music as I do, every genre of music is not for everyone, but I don't think there should be a stigma around what genders can and can't listen to. I feel as if with rock music and emo rap you can't really put a stigma around how females and males are looked at when listening to this type of music because generally, it is for everyone. There is not much of a difference in who plays instruments within rock music; there have been many male and female rock bands that have come about such as Mannequin pussy and destroy boys.
